Adopt International is in the process of developing our adoption program from Bulgaria. Please contact Jeanetta at jeanetta@adoptinter.org for the latest status.
Children available
Children 12 months of age and older are available for international adoption, after being in a national registry maintained by the Ministry of Justice for at least six months. The children arrive in the United States approximately between 20 to 24 months of age. The children are usually healthy. Children of Bulgarian, Roma and Turkish heritage are available for adoption and typically have an olive complexion, brown eyes, and brown or black hair.
Many sibling groups, older, and special needs children are currently waiting for adoptive families. Adoptions for these children are expedited under the Bulgarian law. If you are interested in receiving more information contact Jeanetta Mandadjieva at jeanetta@adoptinter.org or (415) 934-0300.
Criteria for Adoptive Parents
Married couples as well as single women and single men may adopt from Bulgaria. A single parent must be at least 25 years of age. There are no strict restrictions about health history or maximum age of the adoptive parents.
Process
The approximate timeframe from dossier submission in Bulgaria to receiving a referral of a child 3-5 years of age is between 24 and 36 months. The wait for a referral of special needs, older child, or a sibling group can be significantly shorter, usually under 6 months.
Two trips are required. The first one takes place three to four weeks after receiving the child referral and is 6-7 days long. Both parents must travel. The second trip is 2-3 months after the first trip. An escort can make the second trip in place of the adoptive parents.
