Putting baby up for adoption

Heading1

Deciding to place your baby for adoption is a big and life-changing decision. Ensuring you have the right support is crucial for your wellbeing, and to ensure you make a decision that is right for both you and your unborn baby.

Here are some resources to you if you are considering placing your child for adoption:

  1. Putting baby up for adoption – where to start

  2. Open vs closed adoption

  3. Searching for adoptive parents

1) Putting baby up for adoption – where to start

We believe that for any expectant mother, it is important to remember that thinking about placing your baby for adoption is not the same as actually doing so.

Expectant mothers who are considering adoption for their child are advised to research adoption along with other options as part of the decision-making process, enabling you to make an informed choice about your child's future. This is a life-changing decision that should not be rushed into.

By working with a qualified professional, you can decide if adoption is the right step and learn more about what the process involves.

The first step is to reach out to an adoption agency or attorney to discuss your options and ensure you understand each situation fully.

Starting a conversation with a professional organization does not commit you in any way to going through with an adoption for your child. If you ever feel pressure to place your child for adoption, that should be a sign to seek help elsewhere.

Most expectant mothers who do go through with an adoption plan for their child choose adoption because they feel that it is the best possible way to meet the emotional and physical needs of their child.

It is essential to remember that your decision is not final until the adoption papers are signed and processed after the birth. If your circumstances or feelings change at any point before this, you can always review your decision without prejudice, and with support from an organization like Adopt International.

2) Open vs closed adoption

When working with an adoption professional, you will be asked to consider if you want an open or closed adoption.

In a closed adoption, no contact takes place between the child, birth parents, and adoptive family, and no personal details are exchanged. This type of adoption is becoming increasingly rare, although it is the preferred option for some women in some circumstances.

Open adoptions, where contact takes place on a pre-determined basis, are considered to be more beneficial to the health and well-being of the birth parents, child, and adoptive family. Contact can take place before the adoption, providing the expectant mother with reassurance and the opportunity to ask questions. After adoption, contact may continue in the form of photographs, text, phone calls, email updates, video calls, or face-to-face meetings.

3) Searching for adoptive parents

There are a huge number of waiting adoptive families in the US, and there is no shortage of wonderful familes out there.

The challenge with this situation is that is can be easy to feel overwhelmed at the number of different options.

Therefore, often a good starting point in any search for adoptive parents is to draw up a list of qualities and attributes that you consider important. Agency staff can then create a shortlist of potential pre-vetted families that meet the criteria for you to review.

Once you have found one or more families who you feel may be suitable, you are given the opportunity to make contact with them if you wish. Some expectant mothers choose to keep the potential adoptive family updated throughout the pregnancy, while others keep contact to a minimum.
