Can I place a child for adoption after the baby is born?

Yes, you can place your child for adoption after the baby is born. There is no set time frame on when you can or can’t make an adoption plan for your child. We have worked with women who have tried to parent and don’t feel they truly have the support they were offered, or they feel overwhelmed and not truly ready to parent. We often hear that people thought about adoption during their pregnancy but didn’t know who to call or where to go.

It is important to make a decision when you are not in a place of crisis, or in a situation that is temporary. We are here to help women think and sort through all of these complicated emotions. When we work with parents who are considering placing their child, we want to make sure they are not suffering from postpartum depression or anxiety and that they understand this is a permanent decision. Talking to a therapist can help get clarity, one way or the other.

If you ultimately decide that adoption is the best choice for you and your child, making an adoption plan for your 3 month old is similar to the way you would make one when you are pregnant.  We would help you complete some initial documents and assist you in reviewing potential adoptive families. With your permission, we could help plan a transition so the baby could get to know the adoptive family before the placement actually occurred.  This can happen over a number or weeks or days, depending on how quickly or slowly people wish to proceed. As with any adoption, we are here to guide, support and educate people to make the best choices for themselves and their child.

When you are ready, we would sign relinquishments documents and help you plan the type of open adoption you would like. This would include determining how often you want to receive updates or how often you wish to visit. These decisions are all up to you. We often see that women need a lot of contact at first to feel secure that their child is doing well and adjusting into his or her new family. We also want to make sure you have the right support you may need after placing your child for adoption.
