Celebrating our First Families/Birth Families
When you are having so much fun you forget to take pictures!!
For as long as I can remember Adopt International has “celebrated” National Adoption Awareness month by honoring and bringing together Birth/First families. We have a brunch each year and due to the pandemic we hadn’t had one in many years.
Last weekend we finally were able to host our brunch again. Some women at the table have known each other for 15 years and one had just given birth a few months ago. It was powerful to hear them connect and catch up and welcome the newbies who were attending for the first time. It was a diverse group of women with diverse stories and very diverse adoption stories but who also share such a deep and intimate similarity and connection with each other.
Two of the women at the other end of the table are pregnant and were so excited to be preparing to parent for the first time. My end of the table talked about teenagers and ALL the emotions that come with this phase of their children’s lives. Just as it is an honor to watch their children grow through Holidays cards sent to our office or getting to see them at the Love Party it is a complete honor to also be able to hear how they are doing and get to see the wonderful things they are doing in their busy lives.
And to each woman at that table I hope you know that we will never take for granted the privilege you gave us as your social workers to be a part of your story. I hope you always feel loved and honored by our agency in all the other months of the year as well. We hold you close and are always learning from you and always want to do better. I hope you know we are always here for you and appreciate you sharing your lives with us. And next time we have to remember to take a group picture to document your amazing lives and beautiful connection!!! ~ Lisa Clark, LCSW, MSW, Executive Director, Adopt International
** The 2024 National Adoption Month theme is “Adoption Promotes Strong Futures,” a tagline that highlights the success and happiness those who were adopted experience throughout their life.
