If you are pregnant and considering adoption, there are many things you need to know before making a decision as to whether this might be the right option for you and your baby.
Embarking on the adoption process can be a daunting prospect, but the help and support of a qualified adoption social worker is invaluable in ensuring you are empowered to make a decision that is right for both you and your unborn baby.
Here are some of the things you should be aware of before making any decisions around adoption:
1) Pregnant adoption: Open vs closed adoption
One of the first options to consider is if you would prefer an adoption to be open or closed. At Adopt International, we help pregnant women who are considering adoption decide whether it is the right option for them.
Open adoptions allow for a low to high level of involvement when selecting potential birth families. You can choose to meet with potential adoptive families, and agree on ongoing contact once the adoption is finalized. We are are strong advocates for open adoption, as there is evidence to indicate that it is more beneficial to all parties involved in the long term.
Closed adoptions are much less common these days, but some expectant mothers choose this route for personal reasons. As no contact takes place between the birth and adoptive families during a closed adoption, you will need the support of an adoption agency to facilitate the process. As we only work with adoptive families who are prepared to enter into an open adoption, you can have the flexibility to design a contact plan.
It is important to remember that making early decisions, they are by no means a binding commitment. You are free to change your mind at any point until the adoption paperwork is completed after the birth and becomes legally binding.
At this stage, the most important thing for you is to ensure you have all available information about all of your options. A good adoption agency, and especially our team here at Adopt International, will work with you to ensure you make the right decision for you, and are fully supportive of whatever decision you make.
2) Choosing adoptive parents for your child
Whether you choose an open or closed adoption, we advise expectant mothers to outline an ideal adoption scenario for their child, and we will work with you to figure out what this might look like.
You may want to consider aspects such as family dynamics, ethnicity, hobbies and interests, and any personal or religious beliefs.
Open adoptions allow the the biological mother to be involved in the whole adoption process, and as part of this, you have the opportunity to select and meet with potential adoptive families, should you wish to do so.
To make the process of choosing adoptive parents for your child easier, our experienced team can draw up a shortlist of profiles that match your criteria. If you don't have any strong preferences, many expectant mothers find that reading through the profiles of waiting adoptive families can also be a helpful starting point for creating that list of requirements.
3) Making an adoption plan
An adoption plan is a working plan that outlines the wishes and needs of the expectant mother during and after the adoption process. Your plan will guide you in selecting potential adoptive parents, and later on to decide on how much contact will take place before, during, and after the birth of the baby.
As an expectant mother, you have control throughout the whole process and can revisit your decisions as many times as you wish. You can also plan what happens during and after the birth, including who will be present, who will feed and change the baby, and when and how the potential adoptive parents can meet the baby.
