1) What is a ‘birth mother’?

A ‘birth mother’ is someone who has given birth to a child and then placed the child for adoption. It is typically a term best used carefully and only once a child has been adopted.

Placing a child for adoption is never an easy process, and it is entirely normal for a birth mother to experience feelings of grief and loss. However, accessing the wide range of resources and support available can help birth mothers process these feelings around the tough decision they made.

2) Birth mother adoption resources

We strongly believe that expectant mothers should access support at the very start of their adoption journey. Even if you are undecided about whether adoption is the right choice for you, looking into birth mother adoption resources  can help prepare you for the time after birth and placement if you choose adoption for your child . Support and advice are freely available for expectant mothers both before and after adoption, in a range of different forms.

a) Local support groups

Local support groups are an excellent resource for birth parents struggling with mixed post-adoption emotions, creating a safe space to talk through your feelings and help you move forward with your life. These groups are often charity-funded and are led by trained counselors and therapists. Attending a local support group also allows you to meet with other women who have similar experiences, and an opportunity to find shared stories, connection, and feelings.

b) Counseling

Counseling for birth parents ideally starts early in the adoption process, no matter how confident you are in your decision to place your child for adoption. This will enable you to be better prepared to deal with feelings of grief and loss when the adoption takes place, facilitating emotional healing and creating effective coping strategies.

c) Adoption agencies

Although it is possible to place a child for adoption without an adoption agency, many birth mothers find the support of an agency so important in helping process the emotional pain of the difficult decision they have made.

A reputable adoption agency such as ourselves is not just here to match children with adoptive families. We always prioritize the feelings and wishes of the birth mother and strive to provide support you as you go through the complex emotions involved in placing a child for adoption, both at birth and lifelong.

We can help guide you to adoption focused counseling services and support groups and are always simply be on hand for a chat to help you cope with your feelings at this difficult time.

“Well, I chose Adopt International because the awesome family I chose to be my birth daughter’s adoptive parents were already working with y’all, and when I met with y’all myself, you were so pro birth parent, understanding, and down to Earth in a situation that was straight up madness.

I have love, love, loved being in contact with y’all over time and seeing that you really do care, just like you showed me over a decade ago!”
