1) Finding adoptive parents: First steps

The essential thing to remember when making enquiries into finding an adoptive family for your baby is that you are in control. This is your adoption plan, and you should not feel pressured into making quick decisions.

Additionally, making contact with an adoption agency does not mean you are committed to this course of action. Expectant mothers often reach out to adoption agencies to get advice on the available options, learn about the process or just ask some questions which allows them to make an informed choice when the time comes.

As an adoption agency, our overall aim is to help women (and sometimes men) feel confident that they have made the right decision for them and their child, whatever this may be. We also strive to leave expectant mothers feeling confident that they've found the perfect family for their baby, if that ends up being the choice they make.

One of the first things to consider is the type of adoption you think you would prefer. In a closed adoption, you may as the adoptive agency to choose the family for you but their identity will be withheld and no contact will take place. In contrast, open adoptions feature a high level of communication between the birth mother, adoptive parents, and the child. And of course there are all of the options in between.

2) How to find adoptive parents for your baby

With over 2 million potential families waiting to adopt in the USA, it is almost certain that you will find adoptive parents that can provide the love and security you envisage for your unborn child.

At Adopt International, we encourage expectant mothers to map out what the ideal adoptive family would be like for their child. This includes aspects such as the family structure, their personal beliefs, location, and hobbies and interests. What type of contact do you want to have with your child in the future?  What about your extended family, maybe they want to be in volved too? We can then use this information draw up a shortlist of potential adoptive families for the you to choose from.

Adoptive families make profile pictures books where they share photos of themselves, their families and communities and their lives. They write about why they want to adopt, about their jobs and valies and what their parenting dreams are.

Once you have reviewed the profiles of suitable families, the agency will then facilitate initial contact. You may feel 100% certain about the first family you talk to, or you may wish to meet several families - every situation is different.

3) Support for expectant mothers considering adoption

Once you've decided on a potential adoptive family for your baby, the time comes to think about the other details of your adoption plan. This will include ironing out the details of your open adoption agreement and creating a personalized hospital plan for the birth.

The team at Adopt International will be on hand to answer any questions you may have and can also facilitate access to legal and financial support. Counseling will be provided to help you prepare for the emotional aspects of placing your baby for adoption, both before and after the birth.
