If you’re pregnant and wondering whether giving your baby up for adoption is the right thing to do for you, learning how adoption works can ease some of the worry and uncertainty, empowering you to make an informed choice about the future of your child.
It’s easy to feel overwhelmed by the choice facing you. However, it is essential to remember that considering adoption is not the same as actually doing so, and the best way to feel confident that you’re making the right choice for both you and your child is by making sure you’ve researched all available options.
To help you research the best options for you and your baby, today we're going to cover the following topics:
1) Giving my baby up for adoption - first steps
The first step in the adoption process is to talk through your available options. You may choose to reach out to an adoption agency, like Adopt International, or consult with an adoption attorney or adoption-competent therapist.
These initial discussions will include helping you decide if adoption is the right step and other potential courses of action you might wish to take. You are by no means committed to adoption just by having conversations with any of the parties already mentioned, but it is a good opportunity to educate yourself and reevaluate your reasons for considering adoption. You can ask questions about the process, birth father involvement, your extended family’s input, financial needs, open adoption or anything else that is on your mind.
If you decide that adoption isn’t the best option for you and your baby, you can stop the process at any point in time.
If you decide that adoption is the best possible way to meet the emotional and physical needs of you and your child, you will need to work with I licensed adoption agency to create an adoption plan.
Remember that your decision can be reversed at any point until the adoption papers are signed, which happens after the baby is born.
2) Different types of adoption
The next aspect of adoption to consider is whether you want an open or closed adoption. Open adoptions, where contact takes place between the child, birth parents, and adoptive parents, are now the most common type of adoption. At Adopt International we focus on open adoptions, with the level of contact mutually agreed between the birth and adoptive parents.
In contrast, in a closed adoption no contact takes place either before or after adoption takes place. This type of adoption is becoming increasingly rare, but may still be the preferred option in certain situations.
3) Finding adoptive parents for your baby
There are a huge number of people waiting to adopt a baby, and trying to choose one potential adoptive family can quickly become overwhelming. It can help to draw up a list of factors that are important to you, such as the lifestyle they can provide for the child, whether they have any other children, their ethnicity, religion, beliefs, and values.
It is important not to feel under any pressure to make a quick decision, and to always go with your gut instinct. Take as much time as you need and ask as many questions that you have. No question is a wrong question. Sometimes people want to interview a few families and sometimes one family jumps out at you as the right one from the beginning. You can choose to meet the potential adoptive parents if you wish, or you may feel more comfortable keeping contact to a minimum.
