Placing a baby for adoption is a life-changing decision, and it is vital that expectant mothers feel supported throughout the whole process.
Firstly, it’s important to remember that if you make the decision to place your child for adoption, this is never ‘giving up’ on a child. We encourage you to view adoption as making a responsible and carefully thought-through decision and plan that will ensure the brightest potential future for both your child and yourself. To organizations like ours, this is never ‘giving up’ on a child, even though it can be an incredibly hard decision to make.
Furthermore, thinking about placing a child for adoption, and researching what that might entail, is not the same as actually doing so. For some expectant mothers, researching adoption is part of making an informed and responsible choice about their baby's future.
Let's take a look at how to start the process of placing a baby for adoption and what that process actually involves.
1) How to give a baby up for adoption
The first stage of the adoption process is to speak with some qualified professionals to talk through your available options, including parenting, abortion, and kinship adoption. This may be with an adoption agency like us or you may opt to meet with an adoption-competent therapist.
This initial discussion is invaluable in helping expectant mothers decide if adoption is the right step, and answer any questions you may have.
There are many reasons why you might consider placing your baby for adoption, such as lack of family support or unstable living conditions, health concerns, or lack of readiness to become a parent. This is never an easy decision to make, and we strive to support birth mothers who make this difficult choice to secure the best future possible for their child.
2) Different types of adoption
If you have decided to place your child for adoption, the next step is to decide what type of adoption you prefer.
In a closed adoption, no contact takes place between the child, birth parents, and adoptive family. Although there may be certain situations where a closed adoption is preferable, they are becoming increasingly rare.
At Adopt International, we only work with waiting adoptive families seeking an open adoption. In this type of adoption, the expectant mother can become more involved with choosing a suitable adoptive family, and can even meet them if desired. After the birth, contact between the birth parents, child, and adoptive family takes place on a pre-determined basis.
3) Finding adoptive parents for your baby
There are a surprising number of people waiting to adopt a child; in the US alone, the number of waiting adoptive families is estimated to exceed two million. This means the chances of finding the an ideal family for your unborn child are high.
However, this can mean that the search process can also feel overwhelming. If you choose to work with an adoption agency, they will help you to draw up a list of factors that are important to you, from which we they can then recommend a shortlist of potential adoptive parents.
If you wish, you can then make contact with one or more families from this list, or ask them to widen their search if none of them jump out at you. Remember that you should feel under no pressure or obligation to make a quick decision, or to choose one of the families on a given list: this is your adoption process, and a good adoption agency will empower you to be in control at all times.
When you have chosen a family that meets your requirements for your child, you can also dictate the level of contact you have with them both before, during, and after the birth.
